The Trilogy Fight With Gennady Golovkin

Before seeking a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez is honoring his agreement to fight GGG.

Before facing Dmitry Bivol again, it appears like Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will settle scores with his biggest foe. Alvarez declared on Tuesday that he will keep to his prior commitment to face Gennadiy Golovkin once again in a September trilogy fight before making an attempt to exact revenge for his most recent defeat by Bivol.

On September 17, Alvarez and Golovkin will square off at an unknown location and venue for now. The match is anticipated to be for Alvarez's four super middleweight world championships. On DAZN PPV, it will stream live.

Alvarez inked a two-bout contract with DAZN earlier this year. His first fight was against Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight belt, and his second fight was a third encounter with Golovkin.  It looked as though Alvarez might chose to rematch Bivol rather than face Golovkin after Bivol shocked Alvarez on May 7, outboxing the man who came into the battle as boxing's pound-for-pound king.

"We already had that contract [with Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol,"

According to ESPN Deportes, Alvarez made this statement during a news conference held on Monday to promote a business endeavor.

"Unfortunately, we lost, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we're going to do it again. What is certain is that we are going to return in September. And in the coming days ... we are going to announce the fight."

Both of Alvarez and Golovkin's prior fights were controversial. Many believed Golovkin had done enough to win their first encounter in September 2017 despite it being a close fight. A wide 118-110 scorecard that in no way represented the actual outcome of the fight was used to award Alvarez the third round victory over Golovkin, who had previously received scores of 115-113, 114-114, and 118-110.

The two rematched in September of the following year to round up the split draw. The fight was extremely competitive once more, and many analysts believed that Golovkin had performed well enough to earn a slim decision victory. This time, though, Alvarez was awarded the victory by majority vote, winning two cards with scores of 115-113 and drawing the third card with a score of 114-114.

Fans had been calling for a third fight for years, but Alvarez unified three middleweight belts, defeated Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title, then unified all four belts at super middleweight.

Golovkin has won four straight fights since his defeat to Alvarez in the rematch, including a victory that saw him unify the IBF and WBA middleweight world titles.
